Subject: Fram PH8a oil filter IP: Logged
Message: I heard fram is probably not one of the best filters around but I found that the stock PH16 can be replaced by the much larger PH8a. Its almost twice the size. My question is what filters do you guys use that are comparable to the oversized PH8a.
TIA

Message: Magnusson-Moss Act made it illegal for car manufacturers to require consumers to purchase only their replacement parts by dis-honoring warranty because of the use of another brand's REPLACEMENT parts. From what I hear, FRAM filters are fairly low quality, but Dodge cannot cancel warranty on an engine because it used a FRAM filter. If they did, they would have to make it known and give some kind of due notice to consumers before they start denying warranty service based on this.
As far as performance upgrades are concerned, they CAN ruin your warranty status. However, the only reason Dodge can deny warranty service on your vehicle due to a performance upgrade is if they can link the upgrade to the cause of the failure. Meaning, if you put a performance exhaust system on your vehicle and your radiator starts leaking, they must service this under warranty.

Message: Magnusson-Moss Act states that a manufacturer must prove that an aftermarket part/modification caused the failure. Fram filters are known to be a problem. Which might be reason for Dodge to void warranty Vehicles with problems due to Fram, Alot of Fram Filters have cardboard in them. From what I have heard people who use those, end up with Cardboard particles in their engines. Which is why a Void of Warranty might be issued.
Under the Magnusson-Moss Act, aftermarket equipment that improves performance does not void a vehicle manufacturers original warranty, unless the warranty clearly states the addition of such aftermarket equipment automatically voids your vehicles warranty or that the aftermarket device is the direct cause of the failure. The easiest way to check this is to look in your owners manual under, "what is not covered".

Message: I was surfing the site and I just saw this posting. I've been using Fram oil and air filters for years and this is the first time I've heard that their low quality and that Walmart's store brand is a better quality filter. What's the basis for these anti-Fram opinions??

Message: When it comes to oil filters, bigger is better, in my opinion.
I use Wix 51773 (or Fram PH977 or Motorcraft FL-299) oil filters on my 4.7L Dakota, and wife's 4.7L Jeep GC. Same diameter, thread and gasket size as OEM, but this monster is almost 7" long. Fits just fine. Increased oil capacity more than a quart, which I also think is a good thing.
I think I've found an even larger filter that may fit: Wix 51714 (or Napa 1714) that's also a larger diameter. Soon as I find one and check gasket size and thread, I'll let you all know.

Message: i used fram on my previous oil change. I thought they were good quality. when i change my oil 2 weeks ago i removed old fram filter and replaced it with another brand. when i started my truck i heard glug/glug sound. that was the sound of the oil coming out of the block. the rubber gasket from the fram came off the filter and was stuck on the block so the new filter couldn't seal. thank god i didn't just jump in the truck and start driving or i would have been shelling new $$$$ for a new 5.9l. this is the first time this happened to me in over 20 yrs changing my oil.

I'm a little surprised by the fram filters being so crappy. Fram, Prestone and autolite are the same company. I know many here use the Autolite plugs.
I have been running Purolater filters on my wifes cars and my trucks in conjuction with Mobile 1 sythentic for some time now.

Message: Wix is a commmon vendor for filters. Many brands are made by Wix including NAPA I believe.
Keep in mind that one of the purposes of an oil filter is to filer crap out of the oil. Get one that filters smaller particles (10 micron vs 20 micron).
