Message: Well, this was my project for the day -- Klune V Rapid Air Down (R.A.D.) valve stems.
If you lower your air pressure often, you'll REALLY appreciate this trick setup. Now I can deflate a tire from full pressure to 10 psi in a matter of seconds!
If you're interested, check out their website for lots of great info http://www.klunev.com/page_rad_overview.htm. The installation is simple, and can even be done without removing the tire (however I did the job on my new wheels before tires went on, and it took less than an hour total).
Here's what to consider before spending $20 for each new valve stem (yeah, that's $100 for all 5 wheels):
- The RAD system will NOT work on all types of wheels!!
- Do some serious investigation first, remove a wheel, break the bead, and get a good look inside and outside the rim.
- The valve stem needs 3/4" diameter of flat seating area, and the hole must be perpendicular to both inside and outside surfaces. Watch out for the tire bead -- RAD valve stems protrude inside the rim farther than stock. You'll be surprised how few wheels meet these criteria -- unless you stick with purely off-road style rims.
I'll try to answer any questions for those of you who are still interested.

Message: I just bought screw-on deflators. They screw on like a valve stem cover and have a pin that pushes the valve to release the air. Airs down in a couple of minutes. Just another option. :o)

Message: Ive got the same ones. Just dont put them on all 4 tires at once. It lets the air out so fast you cant get back around to them fast enough. ;-)

Message: Can't you just unscrew the cores of the valve stems? I used to do it to the mean people in my subdivision late on a Sunday night when I was a kid. (sorry, statute of limitations applies here!!!)

Message: I've tried just about every method of airing down, and so far the Klune V setup is quickest and easiest. For those multi-day trips I spend on and off road, airing down happens a lot, so I didn't mind spending a little money.
Back in the day, I used a car key to push down the valve core (waste of good off-road time) before finally deciding to remove the core all together. Fairly quick, but you always run the risk of dropping or loosing a core, and you need that little wrench. Later on, I picked up a pressure gauge that had a manual air release -- convenient, but slow. Then I borrowed a friend's screw-on type deflators which, I will say, are the best solution for standard valve stems.
The Klune V has been a luxury. It doesn't require any additional tools to air down, the valve stems are high flow, and all you need to do is unscrew the air release valve! Since I now have two valve stems per wheel, I can air down from one and have a pressure gauge on the other. Boy I'm getting lazy!

Message: I just got the Oasis automatic tire deflators at Central 4WD for $50. They screw on, deflate automatically, and are adjustable from 8 - 20psi. Info at http://www.off-road.com/jeep/reviews/oasis.htm

Message: I received an email the other day about my Klune V RAD valves, and my reply was undeliverable for some reason. So I'll post the question and answer here.
Q - Will the Klune V rapid air down valves work on stock Dakota rims?
A - Not positive, but I want to say no (with out modification to the RAD valve and/or wheel rim). The stock valve stems are semi recessed, and the Klune V's need at least 3/4" of flat, open area around the stem for the air release mechanism. Because of this, there may not be enough room. I'll dust off my old wheels and take a better look. The Klune V's also protrude into the wheel about an inch. This may cause a problem when you try and seat the bead. I actually drilled a second hole for the new valves in the center of my rims (you can't do this with the stockers).
