Subject: Annual 4x4 Tag-along?
IP: Logged

Message:
Last year, I joined the Durango Owners Club purely for an annual get-together (week-long set of 4x4 trips) they have down in Durango, CO. (BTW, I'm one of two "black" sheep...both Quad Cabbers...in that group.)

The question is this: How many Dak owners out there would be willing to tag-along with the Durango'ers, if we worked out a joint-meeting?

Before you respond, take a look at this year's (and previous year's) web site...and see what it is all about: http://www.arizona-doc.com/drmr2002/drmr2002.htm

Don't forget to remind us when the time draws nearer. If I can get time off work I'd LOVE to go.... only if I can bring Tasha though (my dog). ;-)

Dogs are definitely invited along.

Come on people, I'd love to think that we Dak owners could at least match the 20-30 Durango owners that typically attend. I hate to believe that Knobbyman is the only 4x4 Dak-owner out there interested in actually utilizing 4-wheel drive!!

DRMR (Durango Rocky Mountain Rendezvous) is an annual get-together that was put together by the national Durango Owners Club. It is just over a week long, and occurs right around the last week of June. This year it is being held from June 22nd to July 30th. Most participants generally stay at Cascade Village (condo/townhouse rentals about 30 miles north of Durango, CO), and it is our rallying point in the mornings. DOC members get an additional discount on weekly rentals, but I'm sure if we could garner some interest within Dodge Dakotas, that we could also get the discount.

Last year, we hit six different 12,000 feet+ passes, and hit a bunch of "jeep" trails that really show some of Colorado's beauty.

More specifics can be found at the events web site at:

http://www.arizona-doc.com/drmr2002/drmr2002.htm

On a side note, it looks like Dan Arcand (a.k.a. The FastMan) will be in attendence again this year. So if you've ever wanted to have a conversation with the man, and dig some information out of him about performance parts, vendors, the 408 project, or anything else, there simply isn't a better chance!!

On another side note, I only posted this in the Members' section because of the feasibility of pulling it off. I know there are a lot of "lurkers" here, but if they aren't willing to shell out $30 for club membership, I doubt they'd be willing to spend the money for event admission, room & board, travel expenses to and from CO, etc. I would also question Cascade Village's willingness to hand out a 10% discount to event attendants that are not club members...if you know what I mean.

Last, but not least, here is a link for a compilation of photos taken from last year's event:

http://www.keyzs.net/Drmr/

Aside from that, if you have any other questions, feel free to post, I'll respond ASAP.

Question for you though Halo ... The off-roading ... is it mainly just "basic" dirt trail stuff? I ask because we have had the Dak for only a month and it is basically stock ... including just the goodyear A/T's. I'm not [planning any mods before that time.

It's relatively tame for those that have done some decent off-roading. In the off-road sense, many of the Durango folks run relatively stock (I think there was only one PowerTrax Lock-Rite in the group). The only off-road mods I had for last year's event were my 31x10.50's & my winch, and I neither needed nor used the winch on that trip.

Clearance was a minor issue. I came back with a minor crack in my front skid plate, and a couple of undercarriage scrapes...a sway arm bolt on the bottom of my passenger side A-arm and a little scrape on a frame rail. Nothing really damaging, and definitely not noticable.

Out of the 20'ish vehicles in attendence last year, I think the worst casualties were a bull bar, a lower brushguard bar, and a front receiver hitch that was pushed into the lower fascia. The first two were from the drivers picking lines that exceeded their front approach angle, and the damaged front reciever hitch was caused by the driver making a high-speed water crossing that bottomed-out the front suspension & poked the hitch into a well-planted rock. In all three cases, the damage was pretty superficial. The bull bar was fine, just a tweaked mounting bracket. The brush guard had to be pulled off, straightened, and re-assembled. And I am not exactly sure about the front reciever hitch, but if memory serves me correctly, there wasn't really any damage to the lower fascia. It was just a matter of getting the reciever hitch straightened out.

Bottom line, it was a fun trip, and it has been designed so as to be more scenic & fun than challenging. So don't start thinking of trails like Moab or the Rubicon.

On a side note for those that aren't familiar with that corner of Colorado, that entire area is riddled with the remains of old mines & mining communities.
The Verde Mesa National Park is down there...home to the old school native Americans that built their "houses" on/in the cliffs.
And, we spent a day doing a pretty mellow white-water rafting trip...water-level was still pretty high.

When I first started out as a truck driver I had some extra time in Silver City NM, and I bobtailed up to the top of the mountain out there on NM15- (switchback city!) to see the Mongollon cliff dwellings at Gila National Monument. When I got to the top the ranger said he never had seen a tractor in the parking lot, LOL! I went back down the easy way, took a little longer but didn't scare the crap outta me like the way up;)

As much as I'd like to answer that, I just don't know. Last year, there was only one family that didn't stay at Cascade Village, but they brought a healthy sized trailer (25'+) with them. I'm not exactly sure where they parked it, and I'm not sure if it was just a trailer park or a combination trailer park & camping grounds.

You might call Durango's Chamber of Commerce...they typically carry the gambit of brochures & information for tourists.

My hope is that we can collectively bring this to "national event" status...as has happened in the Durango Owners Club (DOC). Who knows, if we get enough participation, we could do this ourselves without having to join the DOC to do it. Strength in numbers!! hehe

Just got back today...about an hour ago to be exact!!

The trip was awesome. We hit a couple of new trails this year, and a small group of us scouted out some other possibilities for next years meet.

Damage Report:
Well, it seems that the JBA headers (ceramic coated even) generate too much heat when off-roading. I melted three of the Made 4-You wire looms & fried two of my two month old 8.5mm MSD plug wires. Let's just say that the ol' 5.9L doesn't run the same when it is missing two cylinders...especially on the same bank!!
I fried something in/on my scanner. I just haven't taken the time yet to find out if it is just the in-line fuse or if it is dead.

I took a nasty, pointy rock to my passenger front tire. It left an inch long gash in the center of the tread & completely destroyed the belts surrounding that area. On the bright side, the Big O down in Durango, CO sold me a 31x10.50 Goodyear Wrangler RT/S for $35. It had seen the ground, but still has all the nubbly rubber things on the sidewalls & part of the sticker on the tread. So, I am thinking of buying a set of four more to make a complete set & cash in on the BFGoodrich Long Trails. They've seen some pretty rocky & nasty trails in the past two years. So my faith in their structural integrity is a little low.

I think that my power steering pump is dead/dying. After it starting to making some nice whining noises, it proceeded to start spitting power steering fluid out of the cap. So now my Dak has a lovely, baked power-steering fluid smell. Oh, and let's not forget that the fluid on the dipstick smells burnt as well!

Hmmm, what else? Oh yeah, the CD player died. It will play on smooth roads, but I cannot for the life of me get it to spit out the CD.

And my Dak has developed a couple news squeaks & rattles that I'll have Dodge look at this week. Oh well, no pain, no gain!!

Imagery:
I took about 140 pix on this trip, and will be working on getting them downsized (from 1792x1200) & uploaded within the next day or two. I'll post on the forum when I get that done.

........well.....I'm off to finish unpacking...*sigh*

heh...the trip, my second, was definitely fun. The coolest thing about that area (down in the southeast corner of Colorado) is that the mountains are just riddled with trails. And given how rugged the terrain is, almost all of them have awesome scenery & views.

As for The Pinking, this has become a DOC (Durango Owners Club)tradition. It started out in one of the weekly chat sessions. From what I've learned over the past year, it began during one of the DOC's weekly chat sessions when someone was joking with one of the more active/prominent members about a possible color choice for accessorizing their D. The DOC president--Herman at that time--jumped in on the joke. A few months later, the DOC had their first DRMR event, and several of members from SoCal DOC banded together & "pinked" Herman's D. As I said earlier, it has become tradition now.

This year, the new DOC president, Steve, was in attendance. As he is an anesthesiologist, his D got hit with all sorts of medically themed pink accessories.

So now you know, and knowing is half the battle! heh

LOL...yeah, we had one take a little "damage."

For those of you that aren't "hip"....

One of the Durangos took a "little" damage this year at a water crossing. A couple of vehicles had headed off on their own for a day, and in their adventures, they came across a water-crossing that looked a little too enticing.

As usual (for most of the group at least), the driver nailed the crossing pretty hard...which is precisely when tragedy struck. You see, the mildly modified 5.9L had propelled the ~5,000lbs worth of D to a good speed when the front hitch receiver intercepted a well-rooted, but hidden, rock.

The resulting collision caused massive front end damage. The receiver hitch itself (class III if I remember correctly) was bent inward & upward a good 3-4". This not only caused pretty major valance & bumper damage, but it also caused the frame rails to bend inward. The combination of these problems then caused damage to both fenders, the hood, and possibly the front doors. And then, somewhere in the midst of all that damage, the front differential housing was damaged. Not sure if its cross-member hit the rock after the front hitch was done with it, if that was a result of the sheer impact, or if it was the result of the frame rails being bent. Irregardless, the front differential sported at least one broken bolt, and a cracked housing.

Thankfully, none of the occupants were injured though.
